Laser Therapy might be right for you

Laser Therapy might be right for you

Our new Class 4, Cold Laser could be just the physio treatment for you.  Our Physiotherapist Susan Herdman explains what Laser Therapy is all about.

Laser Therapy – What is it?

FUN FACT: LASER is actually an acronym that stands for

Light (photons) Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Basically, we can give the cells in our body an energy boost by applying this special type of focused light energy.  This special light is all in phase, in a straight line (so the light beam will not disperse), and is all one colour (or wavelength), allowing its energy to better be absorbed by the body.

Is Laser Therapy Dangerous?

LASERs are everywhere in use today from laser pointers to grocery store scanners to high-tech medical devices.  When used by qualified practitioners who are trained in its use, it is not dangerous.  We make sure that this treatment is right for you and will discuss any risks before we begin treatment.  Prior to starting treatment, both you and your therapist will both put on protective eyewear.

What does Laser Therapy – do?

  • It’s like the “Energizer Bunny” – gives your cells more energy through a process called photobiomodulation (by stimulating ATP production)
  • Helps stimulate the growth of collagen to heal skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones (by stimulating fibroblastic activity)
  • Helps heal wounds and increase blood flow to the region
  • Decreases pain

What does Laser Therapy it feel like?

There is no sensation of tingling, buzzing, or heat.  There will be only the sensation of the pressure of the LASER device firmly pressing against your skin.  Sometimes patients have noted a mild warmth.

What conditions can LASER therapy help with?

  • Muscle strains/tears
  • Trigger points
  • Ligament sprains
  • Tendon conditions (eg. tendonitis)
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Wound healing (helps reduce scarring)
  • Nerve pain (Neuralgia)
  • Acute pain
  • Chronic Pain and Chronic joint disorders
